Friday Morning Update

June 27, 2008

6/27/08 a.m. — Nothing to report from last night or this morning.

Yesterday afternoon, from about 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. the SLCFD Communications center received 22 calls in one hour.  Most of those were reporting fires caused by lightening strikes to trees, brush, and some roofs.  No major fires and no injuries.  A few of the calls involved vehicle accidents probably caused by rain-slick roads.  One of the homes struck was on the 1400 block of Sudder in PSL.  It caused a fire in the attic and approximately $5-8,000 damage.  No one was home at the time and there were no injuries.

July 4th Fireworks

With July 4th just around the corner I thought this information might be useful for news stories:

According to the National Fire Protection Association, in 2006, 9,200 fireworks-related injuries were treated in U.S. hospital emergency rooms.  The highest injury rates were for children aged 10-14.

On Independence Day in a typical year, more U.S. fires are reported than on any other day, and firewoks account for half of those fires.

In 2005, firewoks caused an estimated 1,800 total structure fires and 700 vehicle fires.

IRCC graduates 14 St. Lucie County Fire District Firefighters from Paramedic Program

St. Lucie County, FL – Thursday, June 18 the Indian River Community College (IRCC) Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Department held graduation for students completing the Paramedic Program.  The students included 14 St. Lucie County Fire District (SLCFD) firefighters.  The Paramedic Program is a 10-month program which the SLCFD students took while continuing to work full-time.

“Nearly 85% of what we do is emergency medical,” said Ron Parrish, SLCFD Fire Chief.  “With these graduations we enhance this service to the community, and that is a great feeling.  The graduates, and their mentors, have shown a commitment and dedication to their profession through these educational endeavors.”

In addition the students voted to honor 3 SLCFD firefighters/Paramedics with the Preceptor/Lab Instructor Awards.  This award is given to volunteers who go above and beyond in their efforts to help train the students at the fire stations and on emergency calls.  The 3 SLCFD firefighters/Paramedics honored included: Casey Hogan, Matt Amato, and Aaron Shaw.

June 18, 2008

UPDATE at 4:56 p.m. –

123MM accident, 2 vehicles, 1 person ground transported.

124MM accident, 3 vehicles, 3 people transported

No trauma alerts.  FHP and SLCSO were both on the scene.

6/18/08 at 4 p.m. — SLCFD is responding to two different vehicle accidents on I-95.  One is at the 123MM in the NB lane, and the other is at the 124MM also in the NB lane.  They came in approximately 10 minutes apart from each other.  Air Rescue was just cancelled.  One of the accidents had one ground transport, with three refusals (refused medical assistance).  I have not been able to talk to anyone on scene… so all the information at this time is sketchy.
