St. Lucie County Fire District completes Seat Belt Pledge

Firefighters pledge to wear their seat belts while in fire trucks

St. Lucie County, FL – All 459 St. Lucie County Firefighters and Fire District employees have recently signed a pledge to wear their seat belts while in fire district vehicles.  This is part of a national movement which started after a tragic accident in Texas.

Amarillo Texas firefighter Christopher Brian Hunton, was only 27 and had been with the fire department for one year.  On April 23, 2005 he fell out of his truck while responding to an alarm and died two days later from his injuries.  Hunton was not wearing a seat belt.

The Pledge states: “I pledge to wear my seat belt whenever I am riding in a Fire Department vehicle.  I further pledge to insure that all my brother and sister firefighters riding with me wear seat belts.  I am making this pledge willingly; to honor Brian Hunton my brother firefighter because wearing seat belts is the right thing to do.”
