Residential Fire Sprinklers DO Work

February 23, 2009

Below is a “Good News” article about residential fire sprinklers.  In this case, the sprinkler worked, saving property and lives.  The article was written by Lt. Jack Edmondson, SLCFD Fire Prevention.  If you have any questions, please feel free to call me.

RESIDENTIAL FIRE SPRINKLERS

On February 9th, 2009, fire crews responded to a fire alarm initiated by a water flow at the Pine Lakes Apartments in Port Saint Lucie, Florida. Pine Lakes Apartments are Multi-Family Dwellings that are three story buildings with 6 to 8 units per building. On scene, fire suppression crews noticed audio and visual alarms activated and upon entering the second floor apartment, found a single fire sprinkler head activated and discharging water in the kitchen and dining area. No fire was observed and with very minimal smoke damage.

Upon further investigation,  it was determined an unattended pot of grease left on the stove was the cause of the fire and with the exception of the water, a melted plastic florescent light cover was the only damage directly associated with the fire. In an approximate area of 10X15 square foot of living space, one sprinkler head stopped this fire from advancing to further destruction.

Millions of Americans have installed smoke detectors in their homes in the past few years, but a detector can only alert the occupants to a fire in the house. It cannot contain or extinguish a fire a Residential sprinkler system can!

Fires in American homes have taken a high toll of life and property:

In 1996:

5,000 Deaths

Over 25,000 Injured

Over $9 Billion in Property Destroyed

Studies by the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s United States Fire Administration indicate that the installation of residential fire sprinkler systems could have saved thousands of lives; prevented a large portion of those injuries; and eliminated hundreds of millions of dollars in property losses.

Residential Sprinkler Systems offer several advantages to the homebuilder:

Assurance of a safer environment for their families, protection of their investments and irreplaceable family possessions, and lower insurance rates.

Residential sprinklers are designed to respond to a fire much faster than currently available standard commercial and industrial sprinkler systems. The new home sprinklers react automatically to fires more quickly because of their improved sensitivity. Presently, the cost of a home sprinkler system is targeted at approximately $1.00 per square foot in new construction. It is hoped that the cost will decrease as the use of home fire protection grows. (1)
