Drunk Driving Dramatization

April 29, 2009

The following media release was sent out by the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office.

St. Lucie County Sheriff Mascara announces drunk driving auto crash dramatization Thursday at 1 p.m. at John Carroll High School, Fort Pierce

The St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office, with the participation of the students and faculty of John Carroll High School, St. Lucie County Fire District and Kauff’s Towing, will present a drunk driving auto crash dramatization at the high school at 1:45 p.m. Thursday.

Members of the media will be welcome.

“We have staged drunk driving crash dramatizations for the past few years,” Sheriff Mascara said. “Our School Resource Deputies, school officials, students and the Students Against Destructive Decisions, the county Fire District and many others have worked together to show the lasting, disastrous effects of drunk driving,” Sheriff Mascara said.

With the school’s prom taking place this weekend, this is the ideal time for such a dramatization, Sheriff Mascara said.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

St. Lucie County Fire District Firefighters Participate

in Terrorist Attack Training

St. Lucie County, FL – He can breathe, move his head and has a pulse.  But this week, Tom will suffer a terrorist attack 51 times over the next three days.  The good news is that Tom is not human, rather he is a simulator used by the Emergency Medical Learning and Resource Center (EMLRC), a non-profit organization based in Orlando.

Tom rolled into St. Lucie County in a 45-foot motor coach which features realistic emergency room and ambulance settings.  The mobile lab is the only one like it in the country, and provides first responders with state-of-the-art medical equipment.

Firefighters, EMTs and Paramedics from St. Lucie County Fire District will be training on Tom yesterday, Wednesday and Thursday under the direction of Program Coordinator Eric Dotten.  Tom comes to life via computer at Dotten’s fingertips.  Dotten creates a scenario where Tom is the victim of a biological attack.

Paramedics and EMT’s ask Tom questions about how he’s feeling.  Dotten loads an answer in the commuter and Tom responds.  First responders diagnose Tom, help him breathe, give him CPR, take his pulse and can even give him medication.  Tom responds if the EMT’s make mistakes.  The scenarios are recorded for review and feedback.

This training is paid for through a grant from the Florida Department of Health.
