St. Lucie County Fire Fighters Prepare To Carry On Tradition Benefiting the Muscular Dystrophy Association

St. Lucie County, FL — The Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA), in conjunction with the St. Lucie County Fire District and St. Lucie County Fire Fighters IAFF Local 1377, representing the St. Lucie County Fire Fighters will be conducting its annual Fill-the-Boot event on May 15, 16, 22, 23, 29 & 30th benefiting research and local services for the Treasure Coast chapter of the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

Last year, fire fighters raised over $59,000 for MDA and hope to exceed that total in this year’s collections. Last year, Florida fire fighters raised over $2.1 million of the total $25 million raised nationwide.

Alexia Birth, St. Lucie County Fire Fighter and MDA Coordinator stated, “St. Lucie County fire fighters are proud to continue their volunteer efforts for MDA. It’s important to note that all money raised during Fill-the-Boot is used to provide services for MDA members here in our own community.  These contributions send area children to MDA summer camp in Brandon, Florida, and help provide wheelchairs, leg braces, communication devices, clinic visits and so much more to local families affected by neuromuscular diseases. Thanks to the citizens of St. Lucie County for their continued support and generosity with Fill-the-Boot.”

Fill-the-Boot is a 54-year tradition that began as the brainchild of two fire fighters in 1952. So they grabbed their boots and headed out into the community with the hope that people would fill those boots with money. In August of 1954, at it’s biannual convention in Miami, the IAFF established MDA as the International’s “charity of choice.”  Since that humble beginning, fire fighters’ boots last year raised over $25 million!

MDA is a voluntary health agency that works in each local community to combat neuromuscular diseases through basic and applied scientific investigation, local comprehensive programs of medical services and clinical care, such as those offered at Jupiter Medical Center, and widespread professional and public health education. MDA seeks no government or United Way funding or fees from those it serves. The Association’s programs are funded almost entirely by individual, private contributions.

Fire fighter representatives from across the country will present the proceeds from their nationwide collection on Labor Day during the Annual Jerry Lewis MDA Labor Day Telethon broadcast locally on the CW on September 7, 2009.
